Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand | April 2026
In a major relief for travelers and local residents, a direct bus service between Rudraprayag and Chopta has officially been launched. The long-awaited transport facility is expected to significantly improve connectivity to one of Uttarakhand’s most popular tourist and pilgrimage destinations.
The new service has been introduced by GMOU (Garhwal Motor Owners Union) and was flagged off by local officials in Rudraprayag. The initiative comes after years of demand from locals, pilgrims, and tourists visiting the Chopta–Tungnath region.
Chopta, located in the Garhwal Himalayas, serves as the base for the famous Tungnath temple trek and is known for its scenic meadows and panoramic Himalayan views. Until now, travelers had to rely on multiple transport options, often switching between buses and taxis at places like Rudraprayag or Ukhimath due to lack of direct connectivity.
With the introduction of this direct bus route, the journey has become more convenient and affordable.
The travel duration is approximately 3 hours, depending on road and weather conditions.
The new bus service is expected to bring multiple benefits:
Local residents have welcomed the move, stating that it will improve daily travel and boost regional development.
Chopta and the surrounding areas attract visitors throughout the year for trekking, camping, and spiritual tourism. With better connectivity, officials expect a rise in tourist footfall, especially during peak seasons. The move is also seen as a step toward strengthening infrastructure in hill regions, making travel more accessible and organized.
Previously, there was no regular direct public transport to Chopta, forcing travelers to break their journey and rely on taxis or shared vehicles. The launch of this bus service addresses a long-standing gap in the region’s transport network.
